The Heritage International Institute (HII) is an international academic, cultural and scientific centre dedicated to the protection, conservation, promotion and transmission of tangible, intangible and natural heritage throughout the world and under all circumstances, including situations of conflict, environmental vulnerability and social transformation.

Through research, education, field missions, scientific cooperation and technical support, HII brings together leading scholars, heritage professionals, cultural institutions and international partners from different regions of the world to develop innovative approaches to heritage protection and management. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and practical solutions aimed at strengthening the role of cultural heritage as a resource for sustainable development, social cohesion and international cooperation.

HII develops its activities in partnership with universities, museums, cultural institutions, public authorities, international organizations, local communities and heritage practitioners.

The Institute is founded on the conviction that heritage—whether cultural or natural—constitutes a fundamental component of human identity and a shared resource whose preservation contributes to peace, human rights, mutual understanding, cultural diversity and sustainable development.

The Institute’s work is guided by the recognition that heritage possesses a universal value that transcends geographical, cultural and national boundaries. Monuments, archaeological sites, archives, libraries, museums, cultural landscapes, traditional knowledge, living cultural practices and natural environments represent irreplaceable testimonies of human creativity, memory and diversity. As such, they form part of a common heritage whose protection concerns the international community as a whole.

For this reason, HII promotes initiatives, research programmes and field activities in different parts of the world, contributing to the safeguarding and enhancement of heritage wherever such action is needed or requested. The Institute’s presence in a specific territory is motivated exclusively by scientific, educational and cultural objectives related to heritage protection and valorisation, always in dialogue with local communities, institutions and stakeholders and in accordance with internationally recognised principles of cultural cooperation and heritage protection.

Particular attention is devoted to the protection of heritage in situations of risk, including armed conflicts, environmental crises and rapid social change. By exploring innovative methodologies and promoting effective policy responses, HII seeks to contribute not only to the safeguarding of heritage itself, but also to the broader objectives of peacebuilding, international security, cultural rights and sustainable development.

The Institute firmly believes that heritage can serve as a bridge between peoples, cultures and generations, fostering dialogue, mutual respect and a culture of peace.
